Recalling the final stages of the war in Lanka at a closed-door conclave of the Tamil Eelam Supporters’ Organization, Karunanidhi said, “The security council of the Lankan government held an urgent meet. The council, after taking stock of the situation, decided to stop the war. Based on the Lankan statement, the foreign ministry issued a statement, a copy of which was sent to me,” he said. He gave up fasting believing the war was over.
“Sinhalization has been taking place in Lanka and there is total disorder in the daily life of Tamils there,” he said, adding, the road to normal life for Tamils was full of thorny bushes, mud and mire.
He called for a short-term, medium-term and long-term political solution to resolve the problems of the Tamils in Sri Lanka, but insisted that the immediate solution was resettlement, relief and rehabilitation for the war-affected and internally displaced.
