Triple jumper Voula Papachristou posted a tweet on Twitter in which she made fun of immigrants from Africa. It was decided by the Hellenic Olympic Committee that Papachristou’s tweet was against the spirit of the Olympics.
Her transgression came Sunday, when she made sport of the influx of African immigrants to her country, as well as the presence of virus-carrying mosquitoes in Athens, with this beauty: “With so many Africans in Greece, the West Nile mosquitoes will be getting home food!!!”
Racist remarks are completely unacceptable. The whole point of the Olympic games is that there IS no race. Sports bring all athletes together, no matter what country they come from. The London Olympics 2012 are all about the best athletes in the world, and those athletes’ countries of origin are not important. It’s appalling that anyone should think they would get away with a racist comment that has gone out on the web to the whole world,” says San Francisco resident, Debbie Wishart.
Her tweet prompted thousands of negative comments. Papachristou yesterday reacted by tweeting: “That’s how I am. I laugh. I am not a CD to get stuck!!! And if I make mistakes, I don’t press the replay! I press Play and move on!!!” Her attitude changed completely today and she has posted five apologetic tweets in less than two hours.
